The correct answer to this question, you say, depends on what kind of gems you in your jewelry.
There is no right answer for all kinds of precious stones.

Cleaning can use gemstones, the ultrasonic cleaner. To jewelry, stones containing clean, steam cleaners are a good alternative to cleaning by ultrasound, but care must be taken yet. It is best for your gemstone jewelry with a soft dry cloth and flannel polishing.

Soak overnight in water / dishsoap [liquid], the next day with a soft tothbrush and washes them in a container on the counter. If you are in the sink, I guarantee you a drop in the sink. Rinse with warm water with a sieve or colander. Do not do that opals. Simply rinse with clear water and use the brush ..... .. in a colander and keep in mineral oil.

mild solution of ammonia to the stones .. Except opals again ... Repeat brush thoroughly.
What is Opal? which are porous and absorb water and soap and go cloudy or absorb ammonia and odor ..
